Having had cervical neuropathy, with pain radiating down both arms into ring and pinky fingers bilaterally, the pain specialist tried several Opiates, including Fentanyl Patches, before settling on Methadone.  I have faced an ongoing battle with Opiate Induced Constipation (OIC), having to take Miralax to stay regular for almost 14 years.

I started on a low carb diet 3 weeks ago, and after being on the diet 10 days, purchased some Atkins Low Carb snacks, containing Maltitol, eating 2 or 3 daily. The weight loss slowed a little, but I noticed my constipation was gone.  So far, my GI tract seems to like it better than Miralax, which makes it almost impossible to completely clean oneself after voiding.

I follow the AtkinsDiet because I'm seriously affected by carbohydrates and how bad I feel after eating them. But constipation is a real problem when this diet is coupled with even a small amount of opioids for pain. I prefer to cook all food I eat, but am thinking of finding Maltitol now to use as a supplement.

My journey with chronic pain began over 30 years ago, while as a young nurse working spinal rehab, I injured my back lifting a patient. I am now fused from L2-S1. I have multiple thoracic and cervical issues. I'm a retired RN/PA and I know and understand the frustrations on both ends of the treatment spectrum of dealing with CP. It's been my goal since 2008, when we started this site, to reach out and help as many people in pain as possible. We will continue the fight as long as we can. Please, if you can help us continue to help you and others, donate. Thank you.
