    Posted: May/13/2010 at 9:46pm
I was once in to see my pharmacist for some of my medications.. and she was explaining weight gain to me in a polite way.. I had gained approximately 60 pounds since the car accident.. She told me to go over to the produce department, pick up 2 10lb bags of potatoes, and carry them around the store for about a hour.. and see how more pain I would be in..

So in another polite way, she explained if I maybe lost a few pounds, I may be in a wee bit less pain.. I though hard about it, and thought maybe she way right.. So I started to look at ways I could loose weight.. I started by buying a book called "DieFat, or Live Hard" read that, and then talked to Lorie's Mom about weight watchers. I couldn't afford to join, so she explained to me and Lorie how it worked..

So 1 month ago, April 1st we began dieting, and watching what we ate, and I lost 21 pounds in the month of April.. I have another 19 pounds to loose..
Lorie has lost weight also, but has not shared the pounds yet.. But I can see she has.. and she is looking very beautiful.. But she always looks beautiful.. How do I say it, without her getting offended.. she has lost lots also..

So I was wondering if everyone who is interested in this topic.. would like to share your stories.. and maybe we could exchange some of our recipes with one another..

Some of the ways I have lost is, no more McDonalds, or no more butter on my sandwiches.. I use Hummus, or Avacado..Instead of reaching for the bag of potatoe chips.. I have a apple.. or a yogourt..

After I loosed the weight that I want too, I want to get down to 200 pounds.. I then want to quit smoking.. cause then I will know how to eat... But that is another topic.. So if anyone wants to join in.. and share your success stories, or is looking for a way to loose weight.. or wants to share recipes.. Lets give this a try..Wink

Mike,

That sounds like a great idea!  I have lost 71 pounds since last October, and have a lot more to go, so I have a much longer journey than you do.  But I'm sure there are others who would be interested in this topic.

Since January, my husband and I have been doing NutriSystem.  I know not everyone can afford it, but the ideas behind it are simple.  The hardest thing for my husband to have to learn is portion control.  If you could see how little we are supposed to eat of certain foods, like red meat, you would be surprised!  The hardest thing for me was the necessity of fresh vegetables.  I went to my doctor last October because I was feeling bad, and he found out I was low on all kinds of nutrients!  He started me on supplements, but this diet makes me eat fresh fruits and veggies, and it's amazing how much better I feel!

I know I've lost a lot, but I have an unbelievable amount to go.  I know the weight loss has helped my pain and definitely my ability to do physical activity.  I would like a thread like this!

Melisssa
Pseudotumor cerebri and chronic daily migraines, causing moderate to severe pain constantly for more than 9 years now. OCD, generalized anxiety disorder, depression, PTSD, and panic attacks which started in adolescence (except the PTSD) and are generally controlled by medication, but when under stress show up and cause more severe pain.

I pray for complete healing for each of you!

Great job M and M, Mike and Melissa. With the exception of "being stranded on a deserted island with nothing to eat diet", I have tried them all and all of them have worked. My problem is keeping the weight off. After my spinal fusion in April, 2007, my weight balloned to 294. Even though I wasn't eating much, my total lack of activity was the culprit. Once I started walking, and eventually walking fast and over 4 miles, my weight started going down. I didn't go on a diet, per say, I was burning the weight off. My 294 dropped into the 230's and, although its gone up a little, I am happy where I am at.

Five knee surgeries from 1970 to 2000. Knee replacement in 2000.Spinal stenosis surgery in May of 2002. Diagnosed with Pseudogout in 2005, effecting hands, knees, and shoulders. Emergency surgery in March of 2006 for spinal infection of L 2 and L 3. During surgery, discovered I had Cauda Equina Syndrome. Spine became unstable after surgery and had 360 fusion with 10 pedicle screws, plates and rods in April of 2007. Retired early as a high school principal. Recently, have had trigger finger surgery on both hands as well as surgery for severe bi-lateral Carpal Tunnel disease.

My headache has kept me from exercising, Dick.  The only other time in my life when I lost a significant amount of weight, I couldn't handle it emotionally.  Boy, did guys treat me differently (I was single at the time), and they crept me out.  (creeped me out?)  This program my husband and I are on now is great at teaching you portion-size, and how to eat healthy, not just eating diet food.  When we went off for a few days last week because of Madeleine's Day, I was back to my weight before we cheated within a few days.  My best friend did it just to lose about 30 pounds, and she stopped a couple of months ago and has kept it off.  So I really like this plan.

Thanks for the encouragement, Dick!  It's good you're happy where you're at.

What a great thread!!!!!(Mike).....
I'm at 162lbs at 5'6" and 7 more lbs to go and I will have lost 100lbs!
I would like to get to 140-130lbs if possible. I can breath easier b/c I have asthma, so the weight loss sure dose help. I want you guys and the ppl who come after us how proud I am of us and them on weight loss. I started using the "Atkins" diet buying all three of "Dr Atkins" book and short of memorizing everything. You all know how that was on the meds we all take, My memory is like a dry ritz cracker.
It's kind of funny but not really. I got down from around 255 to 220 then couldn't loose any more. so I started doing "Jenny Crag" and got down to 180lbs so the rest I did and am doing now.
John has been and still is my Rock through everything in my life.
This is one of those "diets" where you eat like this for the rest of your life.
exercises has a lot to do w this and I haven't been able to do that for a long
time. You learn how to eat healthy and how to read labels etc. It's expensive, but
worth it. I think b/c of my meds and stuff I have been doing this new way of eating
for 3 yrs and it has taken this long to loose this weight and nothing has been
gained back. I eat more than 1200 calories a day. Well enough for now.
Mike, Melissa and Dick Congratulations on your weight.... loss.

One of my favorites for a sunday dinner is Smokey Roast Pork with Peaches and Plums.

Cook time is 30 minutes in a 450 degree oven..

2 teaspoons of smoked paprika
1 teaspoon dried thyme
1/2 teaspoon  salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
1 (1 pound) pork tenderloin, trimmed
2 teaspoons olive oil
2 shallots, finely chopped
1 garlic clove, minced
3 peaches, halved, pitted and cut into 1/3 inch thick wedges
2 plums, halved, pitted and cut into 1/2 inch thick wedges.

1   Preheat the oven the oven to 450F. Spray a large rimmed baking pan with olive oil nonstick spray.

2   Combine the smoked paprika, thyme, 1/4 teaspoon of the salt and the pepper in a small bowl. Rub the spice mixture all over the pork. Put the pork in the pan and roast until an instant - read themometer inserted in the center of the pork registers 160F for medium, 30 -35 minutes

3   Meanwhile, heat the oil in a large nonstick skillet set over medium heat. Add the shallots and garlic; cook, stirring, until softened, 1 -2 minutes. Add the peaches, plums and the remaing 1/4 teaspoon of salt. Cook, stirring occasionally , until the fruit softens slightly, about 4 minutes. Remove the skillet from the heat.

4   Transfer the pork to a cutting board and cut into 8 slices. Arrange on a platter; spoon the fruit alongside.

This recipe makes 4 servings

Per serving (2 slices pork and 1/2 cup of fruit) 229 Cal, 7g fat, 2g Sat fat, 0g Trans fat, 63 mg Chol, 483mg Sod, 18g Carb, 3g Fiber, 24g Protien, 22mg Cal

Weight watcher points per plate 5

Complete the meal by serving with steamed green beans, and mashed potatoes (1/2 cup each cooked green beans and mashed potatoes will increase the per-serving points value by 2

Try it and let me know what you think..Wink

Roni, congratulations on the weight loss!  I can't wait until I can say I've lost 100 pounds, though I hate to admit, even to you all, that I still have a lot more than that to lose.  You're an inspiration to the rest of us.

Mike, that recipe sounds delish!

Roni,
If you lose any more weight, you'll have lost the equivilant of John. Seriously, great job. I am the ultimate "Yo Yo" dieter. I lost 110 lbs on Nutrisystem back in the late 1980's, I lost 100 lbs on Weight Warchers 9 years ago, I lost 80 lbs using diet meds, Phen Phen, which have all been banned back in the 90's. Dr Aikins and I lost 60 lbs and on and on and on. All that weight lost was found plus a little more. Out of all the diets, Nutrisystem worked best for me. I lost that 110 lbs in 5 months and kept it off for 2 years.

Congratulations to ALL of youThumbs Up

Way to go.  I love Mike's explanation of being told to walk around carrying a couple of 10 lb bags of potatoes.  I know that just a 5lb bag of anything is heavy.

I eat a pretty healthy diet (I am a vegetarian, but eat dairy and seafood), but have found that exercise is the only way to keep my weight stable.  Just as Dick has found that with his walking.

I was an avid jogger prior to fusion number one.  Then an avid walker prior to fusion number two.  Then a walker/golfer prior to increasing DDD which put an end to that.  Now it is swimming and I just pray that never is taken away from me.

In my opinion the exercise is my antidepressant and keeps my metabolism somewhat stable.  I am a little heavier the past year due to the Lyrica, but we have to make some trade-offs and give ourselves breaks.

Keep up the great work everyone.  I am cheering all of you on, and keep the recipes coming tooBig smile  Mike, am going to make the pork tenderloin for husband and son!!!

Hi Everyone,

Thank you for all the congrats. I appreciate it and Ditto to all of you.

started swimming about a week and a half ago and I love it. I can only go every second day but that’s enough for now. There is no swimming on the weekends for adults which makes for a badly managed pool in my opinion. My left leg does not like to be jerked around so I use what they call a noodle and I put that around my arms and use my right leg to help me move along in the water. I feel great to get some exercise as I haven’t been able to w the problems that I have. I hope to get like Stevie swimming 60 laps in less than an hour, that’s my goal for sure. John & I are spending the summer w  Stevie, Mr. Pete and The Nedster! We are so excited. Well, Stevie & I are going to spend our extra time swimming in the Canmore pool.  That should keep us limber & hopefully in less pain.

Dick it sounds like you have been on diff diets and they all worked, I’ve been on a few but I couldn't lose the weight as I always felt hungry, ha. Great work Dick.

Mike what an incredible feeling to fit back in to your old jeans. I still can’t fit into mine but
it will come. Great work Mike am going to try the rice recipe for sure.

Melissa that is great that you are feeling better losing weight and feeling good eating veggies!
You will only feel better and better.

Stevie you look Great just the way you are J

Well take care Everyone, Bon appetite J

Thank you for sharing these.  And Congrats!!!  Everyone who has had success, I am so happy you've found what works.  And anything that makes you happy, is worth being pleased with.  With the medications I am on, weight gain has been a huge issue, and it's been impossible to control.  I don't eat sweets, (I am allergic to milk, so that's half the battle) no chocolate bars, don't like sweets, not a chip fan, but my problem is, is that I only eat one meal a day.  Dinner.  That's usually because I am unable to move for most of the rest of it, and I have colitis, and they're only starting to figure out how to treat it, so food...hurts...  But I keep putting on the pounds.  I don't drink pop (other than ginger ale) and other than that, it's water and soy or rice milk.  The problem is, is that I can't do much movement often.  I don't know if anyone's in the same position, and knows of non-stressing exercises that could also help (I do old physio routines, but I can't do much more than that).  Any suggestions?

Well, I'm having a bad pain day, but I weighed this morning, and have lost 3 more pounds.  That's a total of 74 since October.  Let's all keep it up!

Good topic. I lost 40 lbs so far just by drinking lots of water everyday and getting out for a walk everyday. Cutting back on juices and just eating the fruit instead. Keep up the good work and congrats on the weight loss. Sara

It's very tough to keep our weight down with some of these drugs! When my pelvic nerves were first burned during surgery and my medicine wasn't helping, I was the lowest I'd ever been.  Between Lyrica, quitting smoking, and back surgery, I'm the fattest I've ever been right now! Total, I gained 75 pounds, 25 between my back being injured and surgery, and 50 the last two years.  As many of you know, I was sticking to oatmeal, fruits and veggies, but with Lyrica, it seemed I couldn't get my weight down.  I'm down about 20 pounds now, but gained a few back after taking the Medrol dose pack to get my nerve inflammation down.  Thank goodness, it's slowly starting to come off! I was pretty upset when I weighed myself and had no idea what I'd done wrong!

I'm doing The Belly Fat Cure, by Jorge Cruise.  He basically modeled it after Dr. Oz's system, but made it real easy to understand.  It adds in protein, which is important with pain, though I'm trying not to add too much meat since I'm not a big meat eater.  Basically it's modified carbs (not too bad though), and low sugar.  WOA! THAT is what is blowing me away, since my favorite fruits, like mangoes, are really high too! Thank goodness for berries, I can still fit those in! It's limited to 15 grams of sugar a day, and just one regular strawberry Yoplait yogurt has 42 grams of sugar! SO, I'm basically trying to fit in Greek Yogurt with a packet of Truvia, so that way I get some yogurt (wondering if I made it if I could keep calories down, but the recipes are usually higher than plain Greek).  The hardest part is counting sugars in fruits, since I love fruit.

Love your recipes, Mike! I should be able to work them in as long as I use fruit sparingly! I think without Lyrica it will be easier to lose weight even if I went back to my old way of eating as long as I watch my portions, but want to stick with the diet I'm on for now.  My parents did FIt For Life, which is fruit in morning, veggies and either a meat or bread with lunch and same with dinner, then all the veggies for snacks you want.  That would be a lot easier for me, and I may do that with all the delicious fruit that we get in summer.  Can't miss watermelon! I do have to say on The Belly Fat Cure, my cravings are completely gone for the first time ever, and I usually at least crave chocolate! SO, I'll hang in there a bit more, it's just a pain cooking every meal.

Way to go Roni.  Just keep moving the best you can, it always helps.  Although with my diet, I haven't had to exercise at all to lose the 74 pounds.  The pain and these drugs do make it difficult to lose and often make up gain weight.

Kat, your diet sounds complicated.  But if it works, all the better.  The Nutri-System that McKay and I are doing lets  you eat fruit a couple times a day, and chocolate at dessert time.  I LOVE this diet!  It has worked well for us.

Mike, you're so close to your goal.  What are you doing?

I have a confession to make.  I cheated big time on my diet yesterday at lunch.  I felt yucky afterward, so it was a waste of good food, but I enjoyed it while I ate!  Bad Melissa, Bad girl!

Mike--way to go after a long weekend of camping out and not being at home to watch things as closely as you normally would.

Lissa--  I think that you have to do exactly what you did the other day at lunch.  We all know that "diets" work.  But it is what happens when you come off of the diet that does people in.  So it is about learning to manage food, and limit portions, and eat healthy.  You should never blame yourself for "cheating" on occasion.

Hey Mike,
I think I weighed 218 lbs when I was in the 3rd grade. I guess I'm big boned. actually, I'd love to be that weight again. During high school, I weighed between 215 and 220 when I played 3 sports.

I went to my "female" doctor today for my yearly exam, and I had the nurse look up how much I weighed a year ago.  I've lost 81 pounds in the last year!  Yeah!  My doctor told me I was his poster child.
