Topic: HELP Posted: Jun/21/2010 at 3:50pm |
This time I am in. Not only did I find out my sister-in-law has cancer, but I went to pain management last Thursday, only to find out that they asked me to leave the program because they have not been able to help me in 10 years. Here is the best part- I have been on methadone 90mg and 45 of oxicodone for the last 8 or 9 mo or more. They cannot help me detox. I feel as though I have been hung out to dry. The doctor says he has no means of detoxicating me. He is not licensed for it. I have some pills left because I never took the full amount. But what if I did not? Now what do I do? The two places here -that I know of to detox, have people who work there and I know them. Just what I need to have it spread all over town I'm a junkie. I have enough pills to just scoop them up and drink them down with something(I don't drink) and just end all this mess.

Hi November, I'm sorry to hear about your sister-in-law and hope your family can deal with this and find strength in this most difficult time.
I don't know how a PM Dr. can discharge you with no medications. Can he help you until you find a new PM Dr? I really think that should be illegal to cut you off like that. Can your Primary Dr. help you with medications until you find a new PM Dr? I don't understand why you need to detox if you're still having pain and still require meds. I hope you can get some help with meds and never give up. Prayers you don't give up. We're here for you. Take care. Sara

Hi November
I too am sorry to hear about your sister in law.I will send a prayer for the both of you. I would call my PM doctor and see if they can help in this matter. I believe it is wrong to let any one go as they have you. But I would make a few phone calls as well. I know here that you can go to the ER for detox..sorry I can not be of more help other than prayers.

Hi November! I'm also sorry to hear about your situation. Would the friends understand why you are taking the pills? If so, you may have luck with them keeping your secret. Otherwise have you checked nearby towns?

November,
I am terribly sorry to hear about your sister-in-law. I do hope that things will go well for her and your family.
I am very upset at what has happened to you. I would call this PM Clinic back and tell them that they are putting your life in jeopardy with discharging you this way without helping you to either find another Doctor or helping you find a safe way to detox. They should be reported to your State Medical Board.
Do you have a Family Physician you can turn to for help? That would be my first choice, after calling the PM Clinic back. ( Sara's thought) I also agree with Sara. If you are still in uncontrolled pain, how is detox going to help you? It seems to me that you need a recommendation to another Pain Management Center. And you may have to travel some to find one.
If for whatever reason you DO want to go into detox, and you do not feel comfortable going to ones in your town, call them and ask for referrals that are in neighboring cities.
And as DC suggested, you can always get help through your local ER.
November, as bleak as things look right now, you will get this worked out. Please remember that and never give up. We are here for you and want you to come and let us know what it happening. Hugs honey, Stevie

November, Sorry to hear about your Sister in law.
I would call the Pm doctor's office relentlessly until they find you a solution. Especially when and if you start to withdraw. That doctor knows what you will go through if it comes to that point. Be the squeaky wheel.
Be strong! Be brave!

I am so sorry about your sister. I hope she gets better.
Its ridiculous that your doctor just dropped you like that! They should not be allowed to do that! I hope you find a safe way to detox.

November, I'm so very sorry to hear about your sister sweetie, I pray that she'll be ok. I'm sorry but I'm just appalled at this Dr, first off just discharging you when you're still in so much pain without referring you to someone else, then the audacity to tell you to go through withdrawals by yourself?? Sorry but this guy is a total JERK, and agreed that he should be reported!
Please, start calling and get some help as suggested by the others, don't stand for this it's all totally wrong and just very bad practice of medicine!!
My thoughts and prayers are with you hon, Hugs Donna

Hi Everyone: The PM DR. said they cannot help me so there is no sense in being in the program. They know I have pain, but they cannot successfully help me so they feel that cutting me loose is a better option than failing. The physician's assistant said "this is a piss in the ocean" as they cannot do anything more for me. She is and has always been a B----. She constantly wrote my prescriptions incorrectly and I always had to go back to the pharmacy pick them up and have her rewrite them. I am still in a state of shock as I have to go down to 30mg of methadone (currently I am on 90) before anyone or place will see me. I have 70 pills left because I did not always take all of them because I was afraid she would mess up my prescriptions. This is worse.
My sister-in-law had her first chemo and says she is just very tired. I pray everyday she pulls through this as she does not deserve to have cancer.
I am just plain scared to death at what is going to happen to me. Has anyone just gone cold turkey off their meds.? I am thinking about it, but I don't know what will lie ahead of me.
fondly, November

November,
Who told you that you had to go down to 30mg of methadone before anyone would see you? That doesn't make any sense.
Did the PM Dr. tell you that they would no longer see you or did the PA? If it was the PA then you MUST insist upon seeing the Dr. The PA works under his license and this is the Physician's responsibility.
Methadone must be decreased slowly and under a physician's supervision. No one must EVER go off of narcotics "cold turkey".
So, it is imperative that you find help now with this situation. Hugs Honey, Stevie

November,
I am so sorry to hear about your sister. I know it's hard to see loved ones suffer, but hopefully the treatments will help.
It's terrible what the doctor did to you. I had a similar thing happen to me and had to quit oxycontin "cold turkey" and I was very sick, and had to make several trips to the ER before finally detoxing. It is not the way to go, November. Listen to Stevie's advice, but also try your primary care doctor...sometimes they will help in desperate situations like your. Don't give up, sweetie. I'm saying a prayer for you right now...
I'll keep you on my prayer list, and hope you keep us continually updated.
Hugs, Lissa

Hi Everyone: I just got off of the phone with my sister-in law. Not a good day for her. I have not told my mom or sister or any of my family about what is going on. I feel like a junkie being sent off to detox. My Sister-in-law disagrees she thinks I should tell them and they would be supportive.I just feel too weird about the whole thing. I am sure they want to see me off all the meds I have been on. Last X-mas they had changed my meds once again and I sort of slide of my chair almost to the floor. My mom freaked and told my husband that they were trying to kill me. Funny but not. So what do I say now -Oh by the way I going away for 3 to 5 days to detox. I'll probably still be in pain but nothing has worked. The premise is that maybe the pain receptor will shut down. That's it in a nutshell. I do feel better if I do my yoga, go to PT or walk. Maybe this will work. I'm praying it does because I want my life back. I just sit in the house all day. My sister is coming for lunch tomorrow- I have cancelled 5 times already and am close to canceling again. I know I can't keep doing this to her, she does not understand why I keep canceling. I feel like I have to hide from everyone. Like I have done something wrong.
I know it's irrational, but after being a very successful person going to hanging in the house by myself...
My son called me every name in the book and wouldn't you know it he is coming home that Monday and I go to detox on Wed. Boy will he be loaded for bear. I stopped thinking about him and do not speak to him and now this almost proves what he said.
Whoa! I have to stop. I am already scared to death to deal with this. Let alone him.
It will be OK-Right?

November,
Have you decided where to go for detox? To one of the centers in your town?
The only person who has to feel that you are making the right decision is YOU. Period. It does not make any difference what anyone else thinks. It is also your right to choose who you do or do not tell.
I have to be very upfront and honest with you. I know how hard you have struggled with your life, relationships and pain since you have been a member with us.
Maybe going off of the meds, or at least getting them lowered or changed is the right thing to try right now. We have members who have gone into rehab on large amounts of narcotics and have left rehab not completely off----but way down to where their pain was manageable and they were able to function.
I don't have the answers for you. I surely wish that I did. However, if you can do this with good supervision and feel that it is in your best interests, then go for it. You aren't going to know how you feel until you try this.
I will be wishing you nothing but the very best, honey. Please let us know when you will be going and how things are going family-wise during this trying time.
I am very glad that you have such a good relationship with you SIL, and that she also has you to talk to during this trying time in her life.
Love and hugs, Stevie

Hi: I have decided to go to somewhere in town. I just hope that I don't see anyone there that I know. They told me it would be 3 to 5 days after I weaned down to 30 mgs of methadone. I have been on 90. I am so sick of living my life around taking pills and still being in pain. I know that many people feel like that also. I have decided to go in 7/7 unless I can wean faster. The worse part is that when I asked my PM Dr. what is safe his response was I don't know. What have I gotten myself into? I have no one to ask or turn to. My life stinks and I just want to get back to my real life. I used to work, teach yoga, have a ton of friends and now I sit by myself not knowing what to do day to day. Sorry for complaining. Please hang in there with me. November1

November, They are trained there to help you. They will, that is what they do. Don't worry anymore about that PM Doctor. I understand how you want your life back. I try to take the smallest amount of medications I can so that I can function as well as possible. I have, as many of our members, given up my career and a lot of things that I loved to do. But as DC says "When one door closes, another opens". I believe that. So, give this a try. I am not saying or thinking that you may be able to do without any pain medication, or maybe a different type, but maybe with help you can get back some of what you have lost. Or find new avenues of interest. Not be so isolated and lonely. That is all we can ever do here, isn't it? To try to help each other live the best lives we can. We all want that for you and we are going to hang in there with you. Promise. Oh, and remember. We NEVER say the "Sorry" word around here. And you aren't complaining. Stevie

You do not need to be sorry for complaining heck that is what we are here for . Each one of us has complained and have and are still searching for answers. You do not have to please anyone but yourself. Bottom LINE. Many of us has been on those meds and to their max until there isn't anything left for us to take. So we have to start all over again.
Our bodies need more an more as we become immune to meds. I last about 6 to 8 months on a med before I get immuned and hit the max allowed. Then they take me off that and try something else. I have found that less is more for me. I hurt Gosh how I hurt and at time I can not function for the pain. But I choose to take less. When the doctors say I need more then I stand strong and say no. No I do not need more. SO now they just tell me let us know what you need and when you need it and we will give you what you need. Yes at times I feel I do need more but I choose not to take all those meds. And I have days that I cry with pain and days I can not move or have to stay on ice packs and both tens units.
November I do not make promises and if i do it is really rare. But I promise that with your yoga and getting out of the house will help and make you stronger. Some days I can not walk for the pain but I do my best to walk around the yard and I push myself to walk around this yard many times in a day. I made bird feeders to make me go out side to fill them. I also promise you that when one door closes another one will open for you.
But it is up to you and you alone to make things change and happen for you. Many of us here at CPS understand all too well. Many people has gone through detox and it isn't because they are weak it is because you have maxed out with the pain meds. So you go through detox But as Stevie has stated one step at a time. In the end you are the only one you have to please. You are the only one who can and will make this work for you. Mind over matter and yes the mind does matter. You can beat this and do great if you believe in your abilities to achieve. Take it one day at a time and if you can not take one hour at a time and if that doesn't work take it one minute at a time. We all believe in you and your ability now you have too. We are here for you as well. With prayers and best wishes you can ..remember November you can.and believe it..

November,
It is amzing that your PM clininc would discharge you just like that, after so many years. Do they know what chronic pain is? It is for ever. That's why they have these PM clinics. They are supposed to help patients manage their pain since there is no cure for it.
Please, don't be embarrased about having to go to detox. It is not like you are a criminal or anything like that. You have been on this medication because of your pain, and that's not your fault. I can understand that you want to keep it quiet. But, if is not possible to go to an out of town clinic, then do it in one at home. The h.. what anybody thinks. Keep in mind that those who really care for you will support you, not shun you. And who knows, you may find that 30mg of Methadone works fine for you, and you'll feel even better not taking the higher dose.
I'm sorry about your sister in law. Cancer is a disease that affects everyone in the family. I hope that she is under the care of a great oncologist and getting the best of care.

Hi November-One positive with detox they can support you about issues with your family. I'm sad to read about your son calling you every name in the book and you don't deserve to be spoken to like that by anyone. So maybe you'll get the support you need at the treatment center. I hope you'll be able to get to a lower dose of your meds okay and then find a good PM Dr. to help you with maybe a better medication for you. This may be a difficult time for you but you will get through this and be stronger than before. Saying a prayer for you. Take care. Sara

November, I'm so sorry to read your post and hear all you're going through. I'm very sorry to hear about your sister-in-law as well, it sounds like the two of you are close and there for each other, which is great that the two of you can support one another. As far as your pain doctor, I ended up in a similar situation with my first pain doctor. The previous receptionist always called to remind us of our appointments and I'd missed one when a new one came and hadn't called. I called to reschedule my appointment, and received a certified letter that I was being dismissed "because I didn't apologize to the receptionist". I'd never missed an appointment before and was devastated! I'd asked to talk to the doctor, who I WOULD have apologized to, not the brand new receptionist, and I'd been with the doctor for years. Many of my other doctors said I played into her hands and as someone who wasn't improving and was a complicated case (plus had a previous lawsuit against the surgeon who I was injured with), I'd given her the excuse she needed to let me go. The only GOOD thing is she gave me another refill prescription on Oxycontin so I had the chance to find a new doctor- of course with all the pain sites I read online, I was terrified of even finding one who'd accept me, especially 7-8 years ago! The next doctor switched me to Methadone, and I ended up going to 90 mgs until just recently, so it was almost a straight switch from Oxycontin. Anyhow, the doctor who's letting you go SHOULD give you enough to get you to a new clinic, which would be 1-2 months dose. It's not that you have the chance to get into one without a new script to carry you to the next stage, and 90 mgs isn't a small amount of Methadone. If you were going down 20 mgs that would be easier than going down 60 prior to going to detox! I'm not sure if you live in a city or country, but what I did at the time was make a list of pain clinics and also spoke with a few detox places, most of which were 30 days. It seems to me your doctor should at least treat you until you can get down to 30 mgs, since it should be taken slowly and as your body can handle it and not done as fast as you can. Also, even if you found another pain doctor, perhaps that doctor could help you detox if that's what you really want to do? In my case, I have intractable pelvic nerve pain so while I've gone up and down on my current medications with my new doctor, I've found what I do and don't need. I've been to three places total, and ironically the second place after I was dismissed from the first was THE BEST pain doctor I've ever been to. She helped get me off a lot of the meds I didn't need in the first place, increased my nerve pain medications, and I was finally not bed-ridden after about 9 years. I obviously can't tell you what to do, but know how frightening it is to be let go when you're currently physically dependent on a strong amount of medication. Frankly, unless we abused our medications, no patient should be dismissed without enough medication to taper down off of safely or to have a decent amount to get to a new doctor. Even with my first doctor, I had enough to find another and thank goodness I did, but I was sure I wouldn't and cried for days over it not knowing what to do. It's a frightening place to be, and many of these medications should be supervised when we go off of them from the beginning. I know the one place I thought of going for detox said I couldn't be on a single medication despite being diagnosed with intractable pain and having been there for some time, I knew I'd need some kind of medication to help with the severity of pain from the pelvic nerves burning constantly, so that basically made up my mind to find a new doctor and see how it went. I know it's not easy to find new doctors and it's scary to be in that place when one treats you so badly, but in my case it was for the best for a change! How long have you been on Methadone? You're down to 30 mgs already or that's where they expect you to be? Methadone's a tough one because it stays so long in the body, so the withdrawals may hit you further down the road. That happened to me with Clonazepam, and according to the ambulance attendants I ended up in a week after going off it too quickly, I should have been tapered off real slow due to the length of time and amount of my dose. If you feel extremely jittery and panicky, sweaty, can't sleep or hold in any food, and so on, these are signs of strong withdrawal. Also, a racing heart beat and high BP is very common. My heart beat stayed around 160 for over a week, so I finally went to Urgent Care and was in the hospital 20 minutes later. You shouldn't have to do this on your own, and shame on your doctor for not helping you though this first part!!! Don't hesitate to go to the hospital if you're struggling too hard, or see if a clinic will accept you earlier if needed. Being physically dependent is NOT something to be ashamed of at all, most of us here are physically dependent on some type of medication, and would be expected to taper down slowly off of our medications if it came to it. One other idea is talking to your pharmacist about what's normal to expect and what isn't so you have a better idea of what you'll be feeling like, since it can be real tough once tapering down and withdrawals start. It angers me that this is happening to you- please know we're here for you to vent to and support you during this time. Kat

Hi Everyone:
I went to my PM DR last thursday and that is when his assistant told me that they could not help me. At the time I was on 90 Mgs. Methadone and 45 Oxycodin. Fortunately I had some pills set aside because at night I would forget to take them. Otherwise I would have walked out without anything. My husband went in Monday and asked for a script for at least 30 pills because the place I am going to will only take you if you are down to 30 mgs of Methadone. I called their office and asked how to safely be weaned off the methadone. Their response was- we don't know because we are not licensed to detox. They did give my husband a script for 30 tabs of methadone. I am down from last Thursday from 90 to 60. I feel horrible. But I will get through this however.

November,
You need to be monitored while you are coming off of the Methadone. You should not be doing this on your own. Methadone does have a long half life and is stored in the organs and fatty tissues of the body. So it will take longer than you think to see it completely eliminated from your body.
Have you called the place where you are going that won't take you until you are down to 30mg and asked THEM how to safely reduce the dosage?
Are you also coming off of oxycontin at the same time? I hope not.
Please get some guidance here before you too quickly go from 90mg to 30 mg. You could get into trouble physically and now I am worried about the Oxycontin as well.
Keep us posted and please remember that you may be able to get help from the local ER. Call them and ask if there is someone who can guide you safely through this, but call the detox center where you are going first. Stevie

I agree strongly with Stevie.. it is hard and does not need to be done alone with out help and guidence.. I do know that most ER's willl help you with detox. When I was in law enforcement you could get two family members to sign you into treatment centers if needed. But in most cases we were told to take a person to the ER for help. Our thoughts and Prayers are with you...

I was just going to say to go to the ER and let them know what's going on November, this is definitely NOT something to be messed around with honey. We don't mean to scare or alarm you but this is a lot more serious I think that you may realize? Please, get some professional help on this, even with tapering down the methadone to the 30 mg, it still takes extensive monitoring and time! I have a niece on it, and it's taking months!
This is all way too much of a shock to your system, and you'll be I have to assume extremely ill, and you don't want that. Please let us know what you're going to do, we do all care about you.
Hugs Donna

November, I my best wishes are with you right now. I had a doctor like that, I am on 9 meds, some of which are heavy narcotics and others such as moderately high doses of lorazepam - he would do it on almost an every two month basis, cut me off cold turkey for only a few days. Just long enough for the withdrawal to get to a bad place. Everything that you have been saying hit me really deep as at one point, he cut me off for longer than just a mere couple of days, just out of the blue, over the Christmas holidays too (and with my family....that's a rather stressful time) and it sent me overboard. I however, had no one to turn to, and did act on that desire to want to get away. The thing is, I have lost two people who were extremely close, to suicide, and it's something I take very very seriously and with a heavy heart. I know how it affects those around the person who takes said action, but at that point, I needed the pain to stop, and I needed the anxiety and the withdrawal to stop. After that, I started going to a psychologist specifically trained to deal with Chronic Pain, and cleansing my life of all the negativity - as much as possible. Friends that were toxic (ie- judged, spread rumors..gone. I ended up walking away from my aunts and uncles and most recently, my brother. In return, I am closer with my parents, and my friends that actually make the effort to accept me, and even understand. Not to mention, when my doctor pulled what he did Christmas, once more (and also missed a diagnosis that ended up knocking me (literally) face first in the mud, and extremely ill) I had more control over any urge to do harm to myself. I struggle with other things such as cutting or other sort of, ticks, caused by the pain, but I have been able to sink so low where I have craved for nothing more than escape, but had the strength to turn away. Are there any centers for mental health and addiction there? I know that's not what you have, but I went to that when I was worried about abusing medication I had, and they were able to helo out a bit. Please please know that there are so many people that love and care for you, and so many people that can relate. All of whom are here for you in this trying time. I send you hugs. please take care, and be kind to yourself.

1st injured Feb, 1997. Was told it was "Soft Tissue" and sent back to work - no X-rays
Late 1997 attended 1st “Rehab Program” to strengthen back. Mid ‘98 PCP took me off work. Tried going back to work over the next couple years, mostly off work due to pain.
June 2000, met with OS for first time. Did MRI , damage was L5-S1 totally blown out. Surgery done Jan, 2001.
Another Rehab program late 2001, attempted to go back to work early 2002. Slipped on water, fell flat on back – screw fusion broke.
Went to 3rd Rehab program summer 2002.
Oct 2003 – 2nd Surgery, due to broken screw, had to operate from the front.
No improvement. Attended 4th Rehab program in 2004, at time it was decided NO work.
March 2006, had 3rd Surgery, this time fusion and instrumentation from Si to L3.
June 2008 Surgeon finally admitted I had Failed Back Surgery.
August 2009 WCB Finally put me on Long Term Disability

Hey: Thanks to everyone who has sent me messages about my "wonderful time in rehab." I am still trying to rest. I was next to the nurses station and all night long people would be there. You have to keep the doors open. I am now attending Intensive Outpatient-something or other. Not too sure why because most people in there are heavy duty street heroin patients. Oh well, it's only a half day, 3 times a week. My son came back from Montana for 9 days for his accident last year. He started on me that night. I was sick as a dog and locked my bedroom door. He just kept calling me a drug addict. Well I left the next afternoon and did not see him at all. They kept me an extra morning until his flight left. He is back in Montana, and still says he never wants to see me, or speak to me again. Whatever. I am off the methadone and looking for new PM. group or person. Yes, my back is nasty. Really hurts, but that is OK I am starting to feel better physically everywhere else. More later. November

Hi November,
I can't imagine going through what you have.
I do think that you have come a long way in dealing with the situation with your son, and while it is heart wrenching, you don't deserve that cruelty. Hopefully someday he will come around and mature.
November, hopefully you will find someone to treat you adequately for the back pain without the awful side effects you were going through on the methadone. I am very happy that you are feeling better physically. Please keep us posted. Stevie

November,
I am happy to hear that you made it through the detox, and you sound so much more relieved and happier. Not as anxious as you were. I am happy that you are getting out and going to the aftercare too. Yes, I don't know why they would have you go to those either, but like you said, it's only a half day 3 times a week, and just the fact that you get there is huge.
I hope you get into a new PM soon.
You are wonderful, and don't you ever forget it!
Hugs and love!

Hi November,
I am so glad you went through rehab, and that you are now done with it. It must have taken a lot of courage on your part to go through that. I hope that you will be able to get a doctor to help you manage your pain in a more practical way, very soon.
I am also sorry your son is still treating you in such an insensitive way. I know how painful this can be as I also have a son who stopped talking to me for several months now. I don’t think he even knows that I am sick. I don’t even know for sure why he is mad because he won’t talk to me at all, not even to tell me what the problem is. All I have is an idea that he is upset about heredity property issues. This has been so devastating to me that I have developed some physical symptoms that are making my life very miserable. My doctor says the root of my problem is all psychological and referred me to Psychiatry.
Now I am under psychiatry treatment, and beginning to come to terms with this situation. I’ve given up trying to mend things with him. I’m just letting him do what he wants to do, and hope some day he will come to his senses, and see how wrong he’s been. I have walked the stages of grief before, and feel like I am going through the same thing again because now besides the heart ache, I am feeling very angry at him. How dares he treat me this way! I hope you will be able to do the same, as you don’t deserve that kind of treatment either. It is just not right to have to go through this kind of ordeal while trying to deal with the burden of chronic pain, drugs, and side effects at the same time.
Many hugs are going your way!

November,
Glad you are doing better! Its great to hear that you got through rehab ok You definitely sound a lot more relaxed now, which is great :) Sorry about how your son is treating you. I've had some family members mock me and tell me to stop complaining and quite a few people that have just stopped talking to me altogether with no explanation. I hope that things can mend with him.
Edie- So sorry to hear that your son has treated you this way. Nobody should just stop talking to someone with no explanation. As I said above, I've had people do that to me recently. It does hurt, especially when they are family. I hope things can mend for you too, and good luck in therapy.

Hi Everyone: Thanks for your support through all of this mess. Yes, rehab was hell and then back again, and I won't say it wasn't. I am not complaining as I just had to do it. I am in awful pain now that I am off all pain meds., but I hope through PT and persistence things will get better. I really wish I could get a full nights sleep. I would give anything for a full nights sleep.
As for my son, I am hurt beyond belief. I did send him a card (no Money) I won't buy him. He will have to figure out why he is so angry, and why I am the scapegoat. There way nothing I would not do for him in the past. Now I know that he will have to make some attempt to "fix" things. I have only the best wishes for him, but I won't take anymore abuse. I know he is going to have a tough time in Montana without a vehicle, but no one did this to him but himself.
Thank you for all your good wishes. November

November, I am so proud of what you have accomplished. To have the courage to get through Rehab is truly commendable. I can only imagine what you went through, and I am terribly sorry that you are in so much pain now. I think that you are looking for another PM Dr, and hopefully you will be able to find the right balance with medication that can ease your pain without making you feel so truly horrible. This is a very good article by Dr. Forrest Tenant called "What to Do While you are Looking for a Good Pain Dr" http://chronicpainsite.com/Articles/view.asp?ID=24And here is an article that may help a bit with your insomnia: http://chronicpainsite.com/Articles/view.asp?ID=37I hope that these help you a bit, November. Hugs, Stevie
